Copyright as a Platform for Creative and Artistic Freedom

BY MATTHEW BARBLAN: What is the relationship between copyright and artistic freedom? At first glance, it is easy to focus on copyright’s restrictions. After all, copyright makes it harder for artists to copy other people’s work. By imposing restrictions on what artists and creators can incorporate into their art without permission, copyright places some limits on artists’ freedom to do exactly what they want with their art. In recent years there has been much discussion about these restrictions, and the common implicit conclusion is that, for the sake of artists, copyright law should be relaxed to make it easier to copy the creative expressions of others.  READ MORE…

EU Antitrust Regulators Open Third Front Against Google

Music Owners Get 50% of YouTube Revenue from Content ID

The Star Online: The music industry has been complaining that YouTube doesn’t do enough to combat piracy. But Google says record labels are making millions from YouTube’s Content ID copyright-detection system, and that the process is used 50 times more frequently than DMCA takedown notices. In a report released Wednesday, How Google Fights Piracy, the Internet giant says that when music companies find copyrighted material they own on YouTube with Content ID, they choose to monetise more than 95% of those claims by opting to leave the content up on the platform to generate advertising (rather than blocking it).
