BILLBOARD: The U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee passed the CASE Act [Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act] last night, which means that with the Senate version already passed out of the Senate Judiciary committee since July 19, the law is ready for a full vote by both chambers. Spotify Is Now A Music-Making Marketplace, As It Buys New York-Based Soundbetter
MUSIC BUSINESS WORLDWIDE: For a long time, we’ve heard Spotify boss Daniel Ek discuss his ambitions for the service to become a true “two-sided marketplace” for artists. In layman’s terms, this means Spotify wants to provide tools for creators that improve the music they make (and the way they market it), as opposed to just giving fans the means to play their tracks. Apple Wanted To Improve Songrwriter Pay to $0.00091 Per Stream. Spotify and Google Weren’t Keen.
MUSIC BUSINESS WORLDWIDE: If you’ve kept half an eye on music industry shenanigans this year, you’ll know that Spotify isn’t exactly popular with songwriters. The Swedish streaming service has joined forces with Amazon, Google, and Sirius XM/Pandora to appeal a statutory pay rise for composers and their publishers from on-demand streaming services in the United States. That pay rise could be significant, increasing the royalty checks coming out of these platforms, and others like them, by at least 44% between 2018 and 2022. READ MORE…
The EU Parliament Approves New Copyright Laws that could be “Catastrophic” for the Internet
INDEPENDENT: MEPs voted for the controversial rules, known as article 11 and 13. The most criticised of those is the latter, which stipulates that technology platforms must filter the things people post on them, and check for copyright infringement. READ MORE…
