President Trump Signs USMCA Trade Deal that ‘Exports’ US Copyright Policy
TORRENT FREAK: President Trump has signed the new USMCA trade deal with Canada and Mexico into law. The agreement covers a wide range of trade topics including copyright issues. MUSIC BUSINESS WORLDWIDE: In November, Spotify was hit by a lawsuit from Florida-based, Jake P. Noch-owned Sosa Entertainment LLC and its sister company, royalty collection firm Pro Music Rights LLC (PMR). The suit, filed against Spotify in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, claimed that Sosa has not been paid full royalties associated with over 550 million streams on Spotify. Noch’s companies seek “over $1bn in damages” from the streaming platform. READ MORE…
COPYRIGHT ALLIANCE: On January 15, the U.S. Copyright Office held an event called Copyright and Social Justice, part of the Copyright Matters series. As the title suggests, the topic was the intersection between social justice and copyright law. The ultimate message the panel expressed was that it is critical for all members of society to have equal access to the copyright system and its accompanying benefits.
