COPYRIGHT ALLIANCE: On Saturday, November 2, 2019, our friend and colleague Jay Rosenthal passed away. Jay was a partner at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP in Washington D.C. Prior to that role, he served as General Counsel for the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) and started his copyright career as an examiner with the U.S. Copyright Office. READ MORE… 

Warner, Sony Win U.K. Court Battle With Streaming Radio Service TuneIn 

BILLBOARD: A British High Court has ruled that digital radio service TuneIn has been operating illegally in the U.K. by streaming unlicensed music and content. The court case was brought about by Warner Music and Sony Music in 2017 and specifically concerned TuneIn providing access to international radio stations that play music not licensed in the U.K. READ MORE… 

U.S. Supreme Court justices navigate video piracy case over Blackbeard’s ship 

REUTERS: U.S. Supreme Court justices struggled to navigate between the rights of states and individuals on Tuesday as they heard a documentary filmmaker’s bid to revive his lawsuit against North Carolina officials he has accused of unlawfully pirating his footage of notorious English pirate Blackbeard’s wrecked ship. READ MORE… 

CASE Act noise gets louder. And sillier. 

THE ILLUSION OF MORE: After the CASE Act passed the House (410-6) on October 22 and moved onto the Senate, the various groups opposed to this copyright small-claim bill turned up the volume on the eerie headline that says Share a Meme.  Lose $30,000!  I and others responded that this allegation is simply not grounded in reality, and to this, Meredith Rose of PublicKnowledge replied with the tweet below. READ MORE… 

Spinal Tap creators settle lawsuit with Universal Music over copyright dispute 

THE GUARDIAN: Gimme Some Money – spoof rock band Spinal Tap once sang. Now after a three year battle with Universal Music the band’s dreams have come true. Cult movie This Is Spinal Tap, a film about England’s (fictional) loudest heavy metal band was a modest success when it was released in 1984 but has grown into a cult classic. READ MORE… 

Unclaimed Royalties Study 

COPYRIGHT.GOV: As directed by the Music Modernization Act (MMA), the U.S. Copyright Office is undertaking a public study to determine the best practices that the Mechanical Licensing Collective may implement to effectively identify copyright owners and unclaimed royalties of musical works while encouraging copyright owners to claim royalties and ultimately reduce the occurrence of unclaimed royalties. READ MORE…
