The Beauty Of Blanket Licenses
December 8, 2015
One of the beauties of BLANKET MUSIC LICENSES is the simplicity, flexibility and many ways that they can be used throughout church life. There are multiple copyright blanket licenses designed to simplify legal copyright use for churches and ministries. The term “blanket license” is used to indicate that copyright owners have granted permission to use their catalogs of copyrighted works in situations where issuing individual licenses would be cumbersome and impractical. We have a great fact sheet resource that explains the many church blanket licenses available here.
In the Christian community, a blanket license provides pre-approved authorization for your church or ministry to use a particular group of copyrights for very specific uses or rights. In most cases, a group of copyright owners and a third party have developed a licensing solution to simplify legal use of copyrights and assure royalty payments are disbursed to the correct copyright owners.
Most of the blanket licenses are based on an annual fee. You can use the copyrights covered in the license program during the term of your license. If you renew after one year, your right to use the copyrights is terminated. Some licenses require detailed reporting on copyright titles used; some licenses require no reporting. Each blanket license outlines exactly what you are authorized to do in the license agreement’s terms and conditions.
