ASCAP: Last month, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) opened a new review of the ASCAP and BMI consent decrees that govern how we license our respective repertories to music users, including digital streaming services; radio, TV and cable companies; and bars, restaurants and retail stores. Old Spice Faces Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Over Its Whistle Theme
DIGITAL MUSIC NEWS: A lawsuit filed Monday in a California federal court by H. Scott Salinas alleges that P&G copied his tune — and of course, didn’t pay him. The complaint alleges that P&G had a license to the whistled tune for a short period of time, and after that time expired, created a whistle melody that was very similar to the tune Salinas created. A Coalition of ‘Free Market’ Organizations Urges the U.S. Department of Justice to Maintain Its ASCAP, BMI Consent Decrees

The coalition of organizations and lobbying groups feel the age-old regulations are required to address ongoing anticompetitive concerns.
